Here in Northern Michigan we are blessed with lots of stone that the glaciers left behind when they receded and formed the Great Lakes. Frequently fireplaces are built from what is commonly called “fieldstone” and is actually a wide variety of Michigan granites that range in color from red to green, often with white striations of quartz grain. These sometimes are “split” in half with a mason’s sledge hammer to expose the beautiful grain and color, and create a somewhat flat outside surface with lots of texture.

Recently we have built some spectacular fireplaces out of Lake Superior stones because of their magnificent color and striations. However, we also have access to virtually every kind of masonry material and can build whatever you want.
